There are several pathways to evidence your sea time. It is worth noting that it is possible to receive a significant reduction in sea service hours when an AMSA Coxswain Task Book is completed.
The reduction in sea service hours can be as follows:
For Coxswains Near Coastal (NC)2 Certificate the 50 days of sea time is reduced to 10 days with a completed AMSA Coxswain Grade NC2 Task Book. This sea service can be 100% recreational or a combination of recreational and/or commercial.
For Coxswains Near Coastal (NC)1 Certificate the 150 days of sea time is reduced to 30 days commercial time with a completed AMSA Coxswain Grade NC1 Task Book. This sea service can be 100% recreational or a combination of recreational and/or commercial.
Other ways to Evidence Your Sea Time
When making an application to the Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) for a Certificate of Competency as a Coxswain they will require:
1. Your Coxswain course completion certificate, and
2. Evidence of sea service experience
Providing evidence of sea service experience can be done in one of two ways:
If you have the required 150 days (NC1) or 50 days (NC2) of sea time then you can provide a letter or Statutory Declaration detailing your experience.
Create a Sea Service Letter to present your boating experience.
