We are now offering Coxswains Grade I Training via our new partner Maritime Training School

Course details:

The Australian MAR20321 Certificate II in Maritime Operations (Coxswain Grade 1 Near Coastal) qualification will enable you to command Australian Registered commercial or private vessels less than 12m long with an outboard engine of any power or with an inboard engine of less than 500kW (670 hp). The vessel must be operated in inshore waters (generally 15NM from the coastline) or, if the vessel is a tender or auxiliary vessel, it may operate within 3 nm of the parent vessel anywhere in the Australian Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ).

Where could I work with this qualification?

With Coxswain Grade I Near Coastal, you may find work on a vessel less than 12 metres:

  • Commercial fishing vessels

  • Charter fishing boats

  • Police or other government boats

  • Passenger charter yachts

  • Water Taxis

What Will I Learn?

What are the requirements for the issue of the final AMSA Certificate of Competency (Coxswain Grade 1 Near Coastal):

Successfully complete the Coxswains Grade I (NC) Course (MAR20321)

Successfully pass the AMSA Mandated Practical Assessment (part of the course for an additional fee)

Obtain:    (1) HLTAID011 Provide first aid
(2) Marine Radio

Complete AMSA form 1850 Certificate of medical fitness – domestic seafarers

Be a minimum of 16 years old at the completion of the course.


Do I need Sea Time?

You need to show you have experience working at sea in a deck, or a deck and engineering capacity, on vessels at least five metres long.

You can reduce the amount of sea service you need by completing an AMSA task book.

You must have completed either:

  • 30 days on commercial vessels with a completed AMSA task book

  • 150 days on commercial or recreational vessels without an AMSA task book

Are there any Restrictions applied with Coxswains Grade I Near Coastal?

If the person applying is colour vision deficient then a certificate restricted to daylight hours will be issued

What prior training and experience do I need?

Contact us to arrange a telephone interview to assess your prior training and experience as you may be eligible for Credit Transfer and/or Recognition of Prior Learning. If you wish to proceed with the process of recognition of prior learning, you will be required to present the required documentation for review. There will be an administration fee for assessing your documentation and you may have a practical skills and knowledge assessment at an additional cost. 

What modules are in the Coxswains Grade I Course?

The course (MAR20321) has 13 units of competency

To be eligible to lodge your Certificate of Competency (CoC) to the Australian Maritime Authority (AMSA) you must:

  • Successfully complete the 12 units of competency (plus First Aid and Marine Radio)
  • Completed the AMPA requirements (AMSA Mandated Practical Assessments)
  • Accrue the sea service

MARK007 – Handle a vessel up to 12 metres

MARN008 – Apply seamanship skills aboard a vessel up to 12 metres

MARH013 – Plan and navigate a passage for a vessel up to 12 metres

MARJ006 – Follow environmental work practices

MARB027 – Perform basic servicing and maintenance of main propulsion unit and auxiliary systems

MARC037 – Operate inboard and outboard motors

MARC038 – Operate main propulsion unit and auxiliary systems

Course Duration

The course is 10 days, 1 day per week (Saturday).
