Coxswain Grade 1
The Coxswain Grade 1 course, or MAR20321 Certificate II in Maritime Operations (Coxswain Grade 1 Near Coastal), allows you to operate within inshore waters up to 15 nautical miles from shore. With this license, you can operate unlimited-sized outboards or 500kW/670hp inboard engines.
This certification is perfect for those needing to carry more passengers, operate at night, and even work as a General Purpose Hand (GPH).

Recreational boating
A Coxswains qualification means you can also drive recreational boats and personal watercraft without a recreational state boat license.
To obtain Coxswain Grade 1 (Cert II)
1) Complete a training course (click here). Grade 1 includes all the Grade 2 units with the addition of competencies related to coastal navigation, first aid, and motor servicing, including inboard engines.
2) Meet the sea-service requirements, whether through recreational or commercial sea-service.
3) Apply to AMSA
Coxswain Grade 2 (Cert I)
For those needing to operate within 5 nautical miles from the shore, as well as acting as a tender of a parent vessel, Coxswain Grade 2 is the ideal choice. The MAR10418 Certificate I in Maritime Operations (Coxswain Grade 2 Near Coastal) allows the use of unlimited-sized outboards or up to 100/134hp kW inboard engines.
Typical uses for a Coxswain Grade 2 include being a terminal operator within a harbor or port and serving as a tender operator for a dive operation offshore.

Coxswain Grade 3
Coxswain Grade 3 is the most limited but easiest to achieve.
With restrictions on vessel length (12 meters), engine size (250kW outboard, 100kW inboard), and distances from shore (including 1 nautical mile), it allows you to operate a commercial vessel. Typical uses for Coxswain Grade 3 include tasks like oyster farming and marina operation, with a maximum of six passengers allowed only during daylight hours.
