Understand Buoyage and Channel Marks Easily

Buoyage (aka lateral markers, or makers or buoys)  is one of the areas that can make new boaters suddenly go quiet. Red markers – Green markers. Channels. Lights. Which side do I pass? What happens if I am coming the other way?

If that sounds familiar, you are not alone. At SisterShip Training, we see this all the time in our NSW boat licence courses. People are usually fine with the idea of safe boating, but once channel marks and navigation marks come up, it can feel like a new language. So we look at this several different ways.

It is not about memorising everything at once

Trying to memorise a pile of boating rules without context is hard work. Buoyage makes more sense when you can see it, hear it explained, and work through examples.

That is why we do not just talk at you from a screen or rush through the topic. We use simple explanations, diagrams, discussion, and classroom markers so you can see what is happening. We even navigate up and down channels ourselves – with nav lights, to fully understand the system. When you understand the purpose of the marks, it becomes much easier to remember what they mean.

Green and red markers can confuse people

Many new boaters look at a green channel mark and wonder, “Which side am I supposed to pass?” The answer can depend on where you are, which way you are travelling, and what the channel is showing you. This is why a simple “just remember this” approach does not always work. We teach the idea in more than one way, because everyone learns differently.

We use real examples

Boating is practical, so buoyage training should be practical too. We talk through what you might actually see when you are out on local waterways. We look at how channel marks guide you, how they help keep you in safer water, and why guessing is not a great plan.  The goal is to help you make safer decisions on the water.

It is okay if it takes a few goes

Some people understand buoyage straight away. Others need it explained a few times. That is completely fine. In our face-to-face NSW boat licence training, you can ask questions as you go. If one explanation does not click, we try another. If you need to see it drawn out, we can do that. If you need a real boating example, we use one. And we do – every time – to cater for everyone’s learning needs.

Buoyage can become simple

Once the system starts to make sense, most people relax. They realise it is not magic. It is a set of signs and signals designed to help boaters move safely. If you are worried about red and green markers, lights, channels, or rules of the road, do not panic. These are exactly the areas we spend time on.

You do not need to arrive knowing it all.

You just need to come ready to learn.
