Coxswain Grade 3 Near Coastal Training
SisterShip Training delivers Coxswain Grade 3 Near Coastal training for individuals, businesses and groups. We can help you choose between two practical pathways: the three maritime-unit pathway delivered through our RTO partnership, or the NSW recreational boat-licence pathway.
Tell us what vessel you will operate, where you will work, what licence or qualifications you already hold, and whether you have access to a commercial vessel. We can help you work out which pathway best fits your circumstances.
What Can a Coxswain Grade 3 Operate?
Coxswain Grade 3 is a domestic commercial-vessel qualification for operating eligible vessels under 12 metres. The exact limits depend on the type of operation.

Two Coxswain Grade 3 Pathways Through SisterShip
Three Maritime Units
$1,200 per personSisterShip delivers the following nationally recognised units through our RTO partnership:
- MARI003 Comply with regulations to ensure safe operation of a vessel up to 12 metres
- MARK007 Handle a vessel up to 12 metres
- MARN008 Apply seamanship skills aboard a vessel up to 12 metres
Current SisterShip delivery
- Three training days
- Two days theory and assessment
- One practical training and assessment day
- Practical training and assessment included
No separate sea-service requirement applies to this pathway.
These units may also be eligible for credit towards Coxswain Grade 1, subject to the receiving RTO's credit-transfer requirements.
NSW Recreational Boat Licence
$250 per person
For up to six participants.
Seven or more participants:
$275 per person, with two trainers attending.
This price does not complete the Coxswain Grade 3 pathway. You still need to complete the NSW boat-licence practical requirements, the AMSA Form 1882 tasks and qualifying commercial sea service.
What SisterShip provides for this fee
- One full classroom day
- NSW general boat licence theory
- NSW boat licence knowledge assessment
Once the required boat-licence theory and practical evidence have been completed, the participant obtains their NSW recreational boat licence and completes the remaining Coxswain Grade 3 evidence.
See our NSW Boat & PWC Licence Training page for course details, practical boating requirements and licence options.
Pathway 2 Has Three Additional Practical Requirements
You can arrange them yourself where you have suitable people and vessel access, or SisterShip can quote separately to assist with one or more components depending on numbers, location, vessel arrangements and trainer availability.
NSW Boat Licence Practical
Before the NSW recreational boat licence can be issued, the participant needs evidence of practical boating experience.
This can be completed using the NSW practical boating logbook with an eligible experienced skipper.
If you already have access to a suitable skipper who meets Transport for NSW requirements, you can organise this yourself. You do not have to purchase this practical component from SisterShip.
AMSA Form 1882 Practical Tasks
The participant must personally complete the required on-water tasks on AMSA Form 1882.
For full Coxswain Grade 3 duties, the observer must hold an eligible qualification such as:
- Coxswain Grade 2 or Coxswain Grade 1
- Master less than 24 metres
- Master less than 45 metres
- Master less than 100 metres
The eligible observer witnesses the participant completing the tasks and signs the declaration.
Commercial Sea Service
The participant must personally complete one day, or at least eight hours in total, of qualifying sea service on a commercial vessel.
This is the participant's actual commercial sea service. It cannot be completed by somebody else on their behalf.
The sea-service evidence can be verified using the appropriate AMSA record or other accepted evidence.
You may be able to organise these practical requirements yourself. An eligible skipper can supervise the NSW boat-licence practical work, an appropriately qualified Coxswain or Master can observe the Form 1882 tasks, and qualifying commercial sea service can be completed on an appropriate commercial vessel.
Need SisterShip to help?
SisterShip can quote separately for the NSW boat-licence practical, Form 1882 tasks and/or assistance arranging qualifying commercial sea-service opportunities. Pricing depends on participant numbers, location, vessel arrangements and exactly what is required.

Coxswain Grade 3 FAQs
Why is Pathway 1 $1,200 when the boat-licence pathway starts at $250?
They are very different training packages. The $1,200 three-unit pathway includes three training days, including the practical training and assessment, and has no separate sea-service requirement. The $250/$275 boat-licence price covers the SisterShip theory and knowledge assessment only. The boat-licence practical, Form 1882 tasks and commercial sea service still have to be completed separately.
Does Coxswain Grade 3 require sea service?
It depends on the pathway. The three maritime-unit pathway has no separate sea-service requirement. The recreational boat-licence pathway requires one day, or at least eight hours in total, of qualifying commercial sea service.
Do I have to pay SisterShip for the Pathway 2 practical requirements?
No. If you have suitable skippers, qualified observers and commercial vessel access, you can organise the practical requirements yourself. SisterShip can also quote separately to assist where required.
Who can observe my AMSA Form 1882 tasks?
For full Coxswain Grade 3 duties, AMSA requires the observer to hold an eligible Coxswain or Master qualification.
Can somebody else do my sea service for me?
No. The applicant must personally complete the qualifying commercial sea service. The appropriate vessel representative then verifies the sea-service evidence.
Can SisterShip deliver the three Coxswain Grade 3 units?
Yes. SisterShip delivers MARI003, MARK007 and MARN008 through our RTO partnership, including the theory, assessment and practical training in our current three-day delivery.
Can I qualify using my NSW recreational boat licence?
Yes. The recreational boat licence is one Coxswain Grade 3 pathway when the additional Form 1882 tasks and qualifying commercial sea-service requirements are completed.
Do both pathways need First Aid and a medical?
Yes. Participants need current accepted First Aid evidence, must meet the applicable AMSA medical requirements, and must complete the application requirements for their chosen pathway.
Can you deliver Coxswain Grade 3 training for my workplace or group?
Yes. SisterShip can prepare a quote for group delivery in the Bega Valley or another suitable location. Tell us the participant numbers, preferred location, vessel details and proposed dates.
Which Coxswain Grade 3 Pathway Is Right for You?
Tell us what work you need to do, what vessel you will operate, where the vessel will work, how many people need training and whether you already hold a NSW boat licence.
We can help you choose the appropriate SisterShip training pathway and prepare a clear quotation.
