Boat insurance is often left until late in the buying process, but it is worth investigating well before you commit to a particular boat.
A boat may look right on paper, pass an initial inspection and still prove difficult or expensive to insure. The age of the vessel, construction material, survey history, rigging, intended cruising area and the buyer’s own experience can all affect the cover available.

- whether an insurer is prepared to cover the boat
- whether a marine survey or other reports will be required
- whether there are age or condition requirements for rigging and other equipment
- where the policy allows you to cruise
- whether the cover suits how you actually intend to use the boat
Do not assume that because the current owner has insurance, you will automatically receive the same cover.
