Boat Licence Training for Nervous Beginners

Not everyone feels confident when they book a NSW boat licence course. Some people look forward to it, others are nervous. A few come along that have been around boats for years but have never been the one responsible or fomalised their knowledge.

If you are worried you’ll look silly for asking questions, or havent sat an exam for many years and the thought is making you a bit nervous – then please do not worry.

You are exactly the kind of person good training is meant to help. And we’ve been doing this for decades and thousands of students. In our classes everyone is equal, valid, looked after.

Beginners are welcome

At SisterShip Training, we teach plenty of beginners. You do not need to arrive knowing boating language or understand channel marks and all the rules before you walk in. That is why you come to training. We start with the important basics and build from there.

There are no silly questions

Boating has its own words, signs, habits, and rules. If you are new to it, some of it can feel strange at first. That does not mean you are behind. It just means you are learning. We would much rather you ask a question in class than stay quiet and guess later on the water. Questions help everyone. Often, one person asks the thing half the room was wondering.

We keep things calm and clear

Our courses are friendly and practical. We take safety seriously, but we do not believe people learn well when they feel embarrassed or overwhelmed. We explain things in plain language using examples. More indepth parts, like the buoyage system, we teach in different ways so more people have a chance to understand them.

We all learn different – by listening, watching, talking through or experiencing it. That is perfectly normal.

Confidence comes from understanding

A boat licence is not just about passing a test, it’s about feeling clearer when you are out on the water. You learn about being responsible as a skipper and what you are responsible for. We talk about how you can make better decisions onboard to keep yourself and everyone onboard safe. You do not have to become an expert in one day, but you do want the basics to make sense and that is what we aim for.

If you are nervous, you are welcome.

Come along and take it step by step. Click here to let us help you build confidence before you get out on the water.
