Farewell Cruising Helmsman… and thanks…

Cruising Helmsman gave me my first break as a freelance writer. That was almost 25 years ago!

Upon hearing the news that the magazine is sailing off into the sunset one final time has made the Parry household very sad.

Caroline Strainig was at the helm when I got my first exciting break to be published in this amazing magazine. My article was about HF radio and how wonderful the scheds are, with WeatherFax and amazing communication and help in the middle of vast oceans.

My freelance writing career began thanks to Cruising Helmsman

I remember sitting in a pub in Port Augusta, USA. We were about to begin our one of our most incredible adventures around The Great Loop in America. That beer, after receiving Caroline’s email, was one of the sweetest. And so my freelance writing career for boating magazines begun.

Phil took over the helm and continued Caroline’s great work, on a successful voyage these last few years. Phil’s great fun to chat with and always ready to answer queries, and support writers and indeed other magazines! Like Caroline, he’ll be greatly missed, but I am sure he’ll pop up somewhere exciting, we’ll all be watching with intrigue – as for me, Phil, I’d just like that beer you’ve been promising me for a while now!  😉

Phil and Caroline may be interested to know that Noel, a huge fan of Cruising Helmsman for forty years, decorated a wall with pictures from Cruising Helmsman – “they were so inspirational and helped me get going.”

Fair winds Cruising Helmsman, and all that sailed in her. All the best Phil, you will be missed!
