Storm Tactic Tips
The sea takes time to build. In the early stages of a gale/storm the seas are building, expect them to be worse during the latter stages
The larger the wave the faster it travels
Opposing currents cause waves to lift high
Choose your options wisely. It may be prudent to keep your vessel moving (in control, via a drogue), therefore slowing the relative speed of the waves and giving you more rudder control. But if you are too exhausted you may need to hove-to.
Keep the water out! Preparation is key. Ensure you have storm boards that you can fit easily, dorado vent bungs. Go through your entire boat to see where water can enter if you take constant waves over the boat.
Storm Tactic Tip Story: During our second Pacific Ocean crossing, on a more southerly route to Easter Island, we were part of a radio sched with five other vessels. Each of us faced a challenge along the way. In addition, every boat suffered new leaks; places they had never taken on water before. We found that every wave over the deck travelled with such speed and force, the deck hatch leaked (into the saloon). It didn’t leak before or after this event!
All boats should carry a drogue of some sort. The one time we used ours, it was a challenge to deploy, taking time when you feel in a panic is hard, but important. The drogue gave us back control.
