Free Workshops Free Sailing!

Expressions of interest to join our free program for Young People…. and in the future for everyone.

Included are: Free Workshops and Free Sailing!

What’s this about?

We hope to announce a new program to support young people in our area. The program is designed to help young people build resilience, specifically those who have found the last few years a challenge (e.g. fires, covid, floods). We love all things boats, and we love to write: this combination is a powerful way to capture and release emotions and feelings.

When’s it start and where is it?

The location is Eden (workshops and sailing) and the first program may commence on the 18th March (hence our urgent call for EOI!), we have many EOIs but have a few spaces left. The program will be popular so provide your Expression of Interest asap!

How do I put my name down?

Call Jackie on 0458 391 660 or email jackie@sistershiptraining.com (anytime)

Full proposed program details

18th March: 10am 2-am  – Twofold Bay Yacht Club, Quarantine Bay
Introduction into boating – writing – photography

Details: Safety on board (lifejackets/radio/knots). We’ll look at where we are sailing, a bit about nautical charts and being on a boat. Practice with lifejackets, tying knots etc.
Plus basic writing/photography skills, i.e. tips to capture feelings and emotions when on the sailboat.

25th March: Sailing onboard Sailing Vessel Fika.
A morning sail in the Bay (inshore waters). Taking photos, experiencing a sail

1st April:  Workshop – Twofold Bay Yacht Club, Quarantine Bay
Further instruction on writing techniques, looking at our images. Writing about the sailing experience. Introduction to writing skills, ie not about verbs/nouns or the pitfalls of pronouns, more how to be a ‘sassy writer’ and write with attitude!
Begin compiling words/articles/poems/drawings/images (whatever format suits) to create our keepsake.

15th April: Workshop – Twofold Bay Yacht Club, Quarantine Bay
Creating the online magazine* keepsake together that includes all the writing and photography of our sailing time. Finalising design and importing everyone’s articles/notes/pictures to create a shared magazine of the experience (including supporters).

Who’s hosting the program?

Jackie Parry, best-selling author, record-breaking sailor, award-winning maritime trainer, and local business owner. Basically, someone who loves to sail, write, and take photos. (And support young people, well actually most people in maritime/writing!).

What if I can’t make all the sessions?

We will do our best to accommodate everyone’s lives and adapt the program as we go to ensure everyone involved is looked after and receives the full benefit.

Are there any specific requirements?

The participant will need to be able to (with assistance if necessary):
Step on and off the boat and be able to climb down the companionway steps* for if they need to use the toilet* (so some level of mobility). Be able to follow instructions (safety).
Write some words, and take pictures while sailing
Use an electronic device to capture the words/images full support provided

*Marine toilets are in very confined spaces, companionway steps are steep and small.

Which sailboat is it?

We are collaborating with our great friend Annette from Paper Sailors Rock, she’s the skipper and another maritime trainer. It is hard to book SV Fika as she is so popular (hence the mad dash/late notice with dates!). She’s sailing past our area on 25th March, so we have to grab this opportunity!

Sailboat “Fika” (fee-ka) which is Swedish, meaning, a moment to slow down and appreciate the good things in life. Here are pictures of the boat: https://www.papersailorsrock.com.au/fika

Will there be more opportunities?

Our strategic plan includes supporting young people in our community. After this project, all being well, we would love to do this again. So it’s a good idea follow us on FB and Instagram for more announcements.
