This course is the first step towards your career in the maritime industry.
The course focuses on developing the practical skills and knowledge required to work as a General Purpose Hand on board a vessel. Students of General Purpose Hand will learn to assist with deck operations on vessels up to 80m in Near Coastal waters.
- Students must be 16 years old or more to participate in this course
- There are no sea time requirements for this course
- AMPA (AMSA Mandated Practical Assessment) is not required for this course
- This course requires you to provide 5 days sea service on commercial vessels evidence prior to certification:*

This course is delivered face-2-face, please contact us if you prefer online study (you will still need to attend a good portion of the course as it is a practical-driven course).

MARG012 Work as part of a crew on a commercial vessel
MARF028 Follow procedures to minimise and fight fires on board a vessel
MARF029 Meet work health and safety requirements
MARF030 Survive at sea using survival craft
HLTAID011 Provide First Aid
MARN016 Apply general purpose hand skills aboard a commercial vessel
