Sailing, Horses, and Motorbikes

The thoughts come and go on a motorbike ride, that’s one of the big attractions for me. Yesterday’s ride had me pondering: Sailing, horses, and motorbikes, and how they intertwine.

What’s the Link?: Sailing, Horses, and Motorbikes

With over 20 years of sailing the world, we’ve met people from all walks of life. What continues to strike me is that many sailors also have a passion for riding motorbikes and/or horses. I have a passion for all three – which is why I have no money! But what do you think the link is?

Boat, bikes and horses: not a sailboat but we had a motorbike on our barge! (And adrenaline rushes on the boat!)

I think it is the adrenaline rush, the unpredictability; the ability to read nature: the wind, the rain, the horse’s movement, the bike’s speed.

I like how the speed of the motorbike and the vulnerability allows thoughts to enter my mind and pass through, not lingering or weighing me down.

When I am stuck I ride!

When I have an issue or challenge to nut out, I stand back and give myself to think it over. Jumping on a sailboat, a horse or a motorbike helps me unravel the issue.

In the Moment

When sailing or riding (bike or horse) you have to be in the moment. I can let thoughts come and go but they can’t linger and often I have no room for them at all (especially on a horse!). And that gives my mind the space it needs. I not only feel better but refreshed, alert and alive. My mind has had a break and can now tackle any challenge that comes my way.

What does being on a boat give you that you didn’t expect?
