Retrieving Your Boat: Navigating Challenges with Confidence

After a fun day on the water, retrieving your boat can be a tricky process, especially if the conditions at the boat ramp have changed.

You can Retrieve your Boat Confidently!

Key Tips for Boat Retrieval:

  • Practice: In boating there is the phenomenom that we all have to be brilliant at boat handling immediately. But it takes practice. Give yourself time, find a quiet spot to practice before you try launching/retrieving when there is a crowd (and many impatient people!)
  • Mind the Tide: Low tide can expose drop-offs at the end of the ramp, making retrieval difficult. Plan your return to coincide with a higher tide, ensuring an easier and safer retrieval process.

  • Slippery Ramps and 2WD Vehicles: If your vehicle has only two-wheel drive and the ramp is slippery, you can use your boat’s engine in forward gear to help push the vehicle up the ramp. Always ensure the trailer safety chain is secured to the bow of the boat before attempting this, as you don’t want your boat to end up on the car roof. It’s best to get someone to show you how to do this before you attempt it yourself.
  • Dealing with Mud or Slime: Slow spinning of the car tyres can dry out mud or slime on the ramp, giving your vehicle the traction needed to climb out. Patience is key
  • Managing Waves and Currents: If waves, wash, or current are affecting the boat ramp, ask someone to help by holding the boat steady. If the water is too deep, run a line from the stern of your boat to a person on shore to keep the boat steady.
  • Use the Right Equipment: There are various trailer products designed to make launching and retrieving easier. Consult with your local marine dealer to find the best options for your setup.

Retrieving your boat is a task that requires careful attention to detail and a bit of patience. By following these guidelines, you’ll be able to handle the process smoothly and efficiently, even in challenging conditions.
