A marine radio is indispensable for any vessel, whether you’re navigating partially smooth or open waters.
Marine Radio is your essential safety tool
It provides vital voice communication capabilities, allowing you to send distress signals, access up-to-date weather forecasts, and communicate between ships and with shore facilities.
Marine Rescue
Marine radios are widely used by volunteer rescue organisations as a log on/log off system for recreational boats, ensuring an additional layer of safety.
Get Help
Unlike mobile phones, which provide one-to-one communication, marine radios offer a general broadcast, meaning any nearby vessel can hear your distress call and offer immediate assistance. This is far more effective in emergencies than relying solely on a mobile phone, which may connect you to a distant source of help.
Did you know it is a requirement to have a licence?
The ACMA manage our radio waves, they stipulate that if a marine radio is onboard there must be a marine radio operator onboard (ie licenced). The great thing is that the licence lasts a lifetime – there are no renewal fees. AND you can get your licence with us for $148! That’s the training, supporting, practice questions, AND assessment PLUS revision prior to the assessment! The Office of Maritime Communications charge $89 to process and issue your licence. But for getting ready for your assessment you will not find a better deal.
This is why we have 100% success rate with our Marine Radio Licence Training!
Recommendation
We recommend carrying both a marine radio and a mobile phone on board for comprehensive communication coverage.
NSW Rules on Radios
NSW Transport say that you only need a radio when you are going more than 2 nautical miles out from shore. We high recommend taking a radio with you at all times. They are inexpensive and when you find your phone doesn’t like the damp atmosphere and won’t work, you have a back up – suddently it’ll feel a very necessary piece of equipement!
