Clear. Practical. Supported all the way through: Online Marine Radio Licence Course
If you need a Marine Radio Licence, you want three things. Clear explanations, fair pricing, and support that does not disappear once you enrol. This course is built around those priorities.
The online Marine Radio Licence course allows you to study from anywhere, at your own pace, while still receiving proper guidance and revision support. The final exam is conducted online, so there is no need to travel or sit in a classroom.
This approach suits recreational boaters, commercial operators, and anyone upgrading their marine qualifications.
What makes this course different
Many courses promise fast results. Very few explain the material properly or offer real revision support. Our Marine Radio course offers fast results with useable material, and revision support.
You receive:
-
Straightforward lessons focused on what you actually need to know, with practice questions so you know you are ready
-
Revision resources designed to prepare you for the exam, not just rush you through it
-
Full support throughout your study, not just at enrolment
-
Competitive pricing that undercuts most comparable courses
What truly sets this course apart is experience. The training is based on extensive real-world use of both VHF and HF marine radio, used internationally in real operating conditions. That depth of experience shows in how the material is explained and applied.
Where do I sit the Marine Radio exam?
All final Marine Radio Licence exams are conducted online.
Once you are ready, you can book your Marine Radio exam here (monthly schedule). The exam typically takes around 20 minutes (VHF) and is supervised by an approved invigilator. There is no requirement to attend a physical location.
The process is simple:
-
Enrol in the course and complete your study
-
Work through the revision and practice quizzes
-
Demonstrate basic radio operation competence
-
Sit the online exam at a scheduled time
After successful completion, your paperwork is submitted for processing and your Marine Radio Certificate of Proficiency is issued. We offer the best value.
Do I need a Marine Radio Licence to get an MMSI?
Yes. If you operate a marine VHF or HF radio, you are required to hold the appropriate Marine Radio Licence.
An MMSI, or Maritime Mobile Service Identity, is needed to use Digital Selective Calling on modern radios. To obtain an MMSI, you must hold a valid Marine Radio Licence and provide your radio licence number during registration.
This requirement applies regardless of whether your vessel is recreational or commercial.
Types of Marine Radio Licences
There are three main marine radio certificates in Australia.
Short Range Operator Certificate of Proficiency (SROCP)
This licence is required for operating VHF marine radios. It suits most coastal and recreational operators and is the most common qualification.
Long Range Operator Certificate of Proficiency (LROCP)
This licence covers both VHF, MF and HF marine radios. It is required for offshore and long-range operations and is internationally recognised.
Australian Waters Qualification (AWQ)
This is a limited certificate that is valid only within Australian waters. It is not accepted internationally and is generally not recommended for operators who may travel or upgrade qualifications later.
We charge the same amount for VHF (SRCOP) and MF/HF (LROCP)
How long does the course take?
Most candidates complete the online study in around four hours. The course is self-paced, so you can take more or less time depending on your experience.
The assessment is closed book. Revision support is available to ensure you are properly prepared before sitting the exam. Bring your questions along – we do find that once all the videos are watched and questions answered you already feel 100% ready.
What knowledge is required?
You do not need prior radio experience.
The course covers:
-
Correct radio procedures
-
Distress, urgency, and safety communications
-
VHF and HF operating practices
-
Digital Selective Calling
-
Practical radio use and responsibilities
The focus is on understanding how radio is used in real situations, not just passing an exam.
Advantages of studying online
Studying online allows you to:
-
Learn from anywhere
-
Study at times that suit you
-
Avoid unnecessary travel or classroom costs
-
Access revision support when you need it
Once you pass, your Marine Radio Certificate of Proficiency is issued as a photo ID card.
Can I obtain a Marine Radio Licence quickly?
Yes. If you focus on the material, most candidates can complete the course and exam within a short timeframe. (Please note our schedule, we can arrange an assessment at short notie with a small additional fee.)
The key difference is support. Rather than rushing candidates through, this course ensures you understand the material properly, revise effectively, and sit the exam with confidence.
Final word
A Marine Radio Licence is not just a formality. It is a safety qualification that matters when things go wrong.
This course is built by someone who has used marine radio extensively, worldwide, on both HF and VHF. That experience is passed on clearly, without unnecessary jargon, and backed by real revision and support.
If you want a course that is well-priced, properly supported, and grounded in real-world use, this approach stands apart from most offerings on the market.
