What is the Coxswain Grade 1 Near Coastal Qualification?

The Coxswain Grade 1 NC is a nationally recognised qualification that meets the requirements of the Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA). It is designed for individuals who need an AMSA certificate of competency to operate small commercial vessels.

Requirements for AMSA Certification

To obtain an AMSA certificate of competency as a Coxswain Grade 1 NC, you must:

  1. Complete the MAR20324 Certificate II in Maritime Operations (Coxswain Grade 1 Near Coastal) course
  2. Hold a Short Range Operator Certificate of Proficiency (SROCP) issued by the Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) or a higher qualification (We are the best value for the Marine Radio Licence, click here for info).
  3. Meet the qualifying sea service requirements specified in Marine Order 505 (click here to view the Marine Order)
  4. Pass the required medical fitness assessment
  5. Successfully complete the final AMSA assessment (AMPA – AMSA Mandated Practical Assessment) – we do this as part of your course

No Entry Requirements

One of the great things about this qualification is that there are no formal entry requirements, making it accessible to anyone looking to build a career in the maritime industry. But it doesn’t come easily, you must be prepared to work. Being in command of a vessel is a huge responsibility. We’ll support you all the way though!

Course Structure

The Coxswain Grade 1 NC qualification consists of 13 core units:

  • HLTAID011 – Provide First Aid
  • MARB027 – Perform basic servicing and maintenance of propulsion units
  • MARC037 – Operate inboard and outboard motors
  • MARC038 – Operate main propulsion units and auxiliary systems
  • MARF028 – Minimise and fight fires on board
  • MARF029 – Work health and safety compliance
  • MARF030 – Survival at sea using survival craft
  • MARF060 – Basic survival skills in vessel abandonment
  • MARH013 – Plan and navigate a passage for vessels up to 12m
  • MARI003 – Regulatory compliance for vessel operation
  • MARJ006 – Follow environmental work practices
  • MARK007 – Handle a vessel up to 12m
  • MARN008 – Seamanship skills for vessels up to 12m
