Finding the Right Mentorship: A Path to Excellence

Winning an award is always a humbling experience, and receiving the Tall Ships Australia and New Zealand Medallion award has been one of the highlights of my journey. While I received the award via Zoom, I’m thrilled to share that I will be accepting it in person at the Wooden Boat Festival in Tasmania this February—an event I’m incredibly excited about.

This recognition isn’t just about a personal achievement; it’s a celebration of the incredible community we’ve built through SisterShip Training. It’s about the hard work, dedication, and the passion for learning and sharing that we strive to embody every day. This award reflects the commitment of everyone involved—from students to mentors—and the lasting connections we create along the way.

MentorShip

At the heart of our success is MentorShip network that continues long after the course ends. We believe in guiding our students every step of the way, offering advice, encouragement, and practical support as they grow into confident mariners.

Whether it’s navigating challenging conditions, selecting the right equipment, or simply finding the courage to tackle something new, our MentorShip makes sure no one feels adrift. Over the years, we’ve seen countless students transform through this approach—from complete beginners to skilled and passionate boaters. Their successes are our greatest rewards.

MentorShip has also been a cornerstone of my personal journey. I’ve been fortunate to learn from some of the best in the maritime industry, and their guidance has inspired me to pay it forward. A word of encouragement or a timely piece of advice can change everything, and it’s this spirit that drives me to foster an environment where every student feels supported and empowered.

Recognition for Everyone

This recognition isn’t just for me; it’s for everyone who has trusted us with their learning journey. It’s for the community we’ve built—a network of mariners who share their knowledge, experiences, and enthusiasm for life on the water. I’m particularly proud of the two members of the SV Rhona H crew, Julie Porter and Heath Watts, who recently completed their Coxswain’s course with us. Seeing their growth and success is what makes this work so fulfilling.

Confidence on the Water

So, if you’re considering setting sail on a new maritime adventure, remember this: finding the right mentor can make all the difference. A great mentor doesn’t just teach you the skills—they support you through the challenges, cheer you on through the milestones, and help you find your confidence on the water.

To those who have been part of our story—thank you. Your trust and enthusiasm fuel our passion for excellence. Together, we’re building a legacy of confident, capable, and connected mariners. Here’s to mentorship, community, and the shared love of the sea!
