Anchoring: Two Examples That Make You think

Aside from the potential terror of dragging onto other boats or rocks, there is another issue many recreational boaters may not have considered that can be just as threatening.

This is the responsibility of the boat owner to be showing visual aids to others that the vessel is at anchor.

If you look around most anchorages, you will likely see anchor lights displayed on most boats at night.

But do you know about the day-shape?

Regulations stipulate: ‘Vessels at anchor shall hoist a black ball shape forward where it can best be seen’. (Black balls should be 0.6m in diameter).

Wondering if this is a bit of over the top fuss? Consider these next two astonishing examples before making such conclusions:

  • An Australian sailor was anchored in the Brisbane River. One night, two lads in a speed boat hit the anchored boat and were killed instantly. Investigation proved that she was carrying her anchor light and therefore absolved from any responsibility.
  • Two jet-ski riders in the USA ran over an anchor chain of a boat on anchor during the day. They were too close, hit the
    chain and both died.

The skipper of the boat on anchor was held partly responsible for their deaths, as he did not have the black ball hoisted.

Boat ownership is more than sundowners at sunset and cruising to idyllic little bays.

There is a certain amount of responsibility required of you, whether you’re aware of it, or not. Make sure you don’t get caught out.

You can even learn from the comfort of your own home… or while at anchor with your day shape or anchor light in operation!

  1. You’re quite right. I’ve always carried anchor light, but rarely day shape. In the Yarilguch Bay, where my boat stayed it wasn’t so important but In harbours with active movement it’s really necessary.
Thank you for your letters. Although my boat is 10 years on the dry (My Crimea is occupied by Moscovia), I read them and hope that one day I’ll launch my bout again.
    Have a nice day!
