A safe day on the water begins with sound knowledge. This Beginners Boating Course brings together the essential skills every new skipper needs, with clear guidance that follows NSW rules and the general boating standards used across Australia. It is designed to help first time boaters understand their responsibilities and to give returning skippers a reliable refresher before heading out again. (We provide an overview of all the States Safety Equipment rules).
The course covers the core elements of small-craft safety, including the correct use of lifejackets and other mandatory equipment, weather conditions, and how to plan a simple trip. Learners are introduced to navigation marks and buoys, sound signals, and the rules that decide which vessel must give way. These are the foundations of collision avoidance and are important for safe operation on any waterway.
Lights and shapes are explained in plain terms so that you can recognise vessels at night or in restricted visibility. The course also includes guidance on anchoring in a secure and practical manner, handling a small boat at low and moderate speeds, and understanding the behaviour of a vessel in waves, wind and tide. Radio use is covered- monitor channels and follow accepted distress and safety procedures.
Emergency awareness is another key part of the program. The course walks you through person-overboard response, basic steps to take in unexpected situations, and the common causes of small-boat incidents. These sections are designed to build confidence and reduce risk by giving you the knowledge to act quickly and correctly when needed.
Because boating rules can differ from state to state, the course highlights NSW requirements (and other States via document/links) and reminds learners to check for updates or variations in other jurisdictions before travelling. This keeps the training relevant while supporting good practice throughout Australia.
This course offers a clear and reliable grounding in safe operation. It provides the knowledge to make better decisions, avoid common hazards and handle your vessel with greater confidence.
